Watching a seed turn into a small plant gives you a real sense of achievement and taking care of plants and watching them grow can help you relax and lighten your anxiety if you are feeling anxious, so with the impact of the lockdown on mental health we thought now would be the perfect time to ask Mac Lowe from the Ashridge House gardens team to share his expertise on how to grow your own herb garden!
What you'll need
A pot or container, preferably something with drainage holes at the bottom (if there are no drainage holes add a layer of gravel)
Get creative use a jam jar or whatever you have at home!
Peat free compost, vermiculite or garden soil
Seeds such as basil, chives, coriander, mint, parsley and thyme

Most container grown herbs can be treated similarly, however it’s a good idea to learn about your herbs. Find out how much sunlight and water your seeds need. Your windowsill is usually the perfect location to grow herbs. Your plants will regrow after harvesting, so don’t throw them away!
Step 1 - Grow your own herb garden
Get your pots or containers and your compost (make sure your compost is moist). Fill your pots to around 80-90% with either compost or sifted garden soil. If you go to close to the top of your pot you may lose soil and seeds when watering. Gently compact the soil inside each pot
Step 2 - Grow your own herb garden
Now get your seeds ready to sow! Ideally you want to sow approximately 15-20 seeds per pot (depending on size of your pot). Sow the seeds spaced out on the surface of the soil. Cover the seeds very lightly with compost, vermiculite or garden soil
Step 3 - Grow your own herb garden
Now you have sown your seeds you can water and label them. It is better to water your seeds by placing the pots in a tray or dish of water and letting the water soak up into the pots. If this is not possible then poke small holes into the cap of a milk bottle and use this to gently water from above
Step 4 - Grow your own herb garden
Your herbs should be ready to start harvesting in 3 or 4 weeks, ready for you to add to any dish. Enjoy, your herbs are nutritionally amazing! Your plants will regrow after harvesting, so continue to water and take care of them.
